The Counts of San Bonifacio have a long history intertwined with wine and war, dating back to at least 929 AD when Conte Milone San Bonifacio gifted land with vineyards to Benedictine monks. For centuries, the family produced wine for their estates, but only in recent generations did Count Manfredo and Countess Sarah begin bottling first-growth wines.
Historically, the family's story connects with Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. The Montagues were based on the Montecchi faction, who opposed the Azzi Marquis of Este, an ally of the Counts of San Bonifacio. The family, also known as the Cappeletti, played a role in the conflicts, with Count Sauro San Bonifacio being killed by Tiserio, a member of the opposing faction. After Sauro’s death, Shakespeare’s tale was inspired by how the Counts of Verona lost power and became the Counts of San Bonifacio around 1207.
Today, the family resides in Padua, managing their estates across Italy, continuing their historic legacy in winemaking.
